If you are purchasing Michigan strawberries, they should be taken care of immediately. It is best to it the same day they are picked. If for some reason you can't, you should refrigerate them immediately.
Basically, treat them like fresh meat. Do NOT set them in a cool basement or air-conditioned house; they must be refrigerated. Do NOT wash them first. Simply put them in the fridge until you are ready to use them, then wash them just before you use them.
Fresh fruits can be frozen, it is best to wash them and then add sugar. The sugar acts as a preservative and helps keep them from turning mushy when thawed.
Most vegetables should be blanched before being frozen. If your cookbook doesn't have instructions just send us an email for advice.
We offer a "you pick" option for strawberries only. Everything else is sold already picked.
We pick strawberries everyday weather permitting. Berries sold at the counter are always that days picking unless there was a weather delay. We always inform the customers.
If you are picking up fresh strawberries the best time is in the morning. Strawberries picked in the heat of the day tend to be soft. It is like collecting them out of an oven. We start picking at 6:00 a.m. by 2:00 p.m. they start to get soft. Remember, Mother Nature plays a key role in the quality of the berries.
Maple syrup is generally made in March and is available year round until the supply is exhausted.
